HIGHLEY WELFARE BOWLS CLUB
Air Ambulance afternoon
As well as being a fun tournament, over two
consecutive Sunday afternoons this popular event
brings both Highley and Cleobury Clubs
together to help raise some cash to help support
the Midland Air Ambulance Service.
Starting at 2pm, Highley held the first leg
with a good turn out from both clubs, 52 bowlers
taking part, every pair playing at least 4
games.
The green ran superbly, a credit to both club
and groundsman, Ron Smith.
Halfway into the tournament we stopped for
refreshments which were excellent.
Before the semi final the raffle was drawn with
many prizes kindly donated by the Highley
members.
The final was played over 8 ends between Ivor
Lloyd (CM) and John Russell (H) against Phil
Pack (CM) and John Smith (H) with Phil and John
running out the eventual winners.
All
4 finalists receiving a bottle of wine each.
Together with monies raised from a skittles
evening at Chelmarsh Social club the final total
raised was £200 - Well Done everyone involved!
We now look forward to the second leg at
Cleobury.
|
Report by Phil Pack.
|
On Sunday 8th August the second leg of the Air Ambulance
fund raiser took place at Cleobury Bowling Club. The weather
stayed fine with the sun warming things up in the afternoon.
Where possible the pairings were drawn with Cleobury
bowlers playing with Highley bowlers and played, like last
week, as a tournament organised by Phil Pack and John
Cadwallader.
Halfway through the proceedings we had refreshments,
which were excellent, and followed by the raffle for the 25
prizes donated by members.
Christine Lloyd suggested auctioning off the remaining
'fudge-cake', Eunice Williams gave the winning bid of £4 and
got a free tin into the bargain. Well Done Eunice!.
The tournament restarted and was played down to a
semi-final followed by the final between
Alan Sorrell(CM) and Pam Lacey(CM) against Chris
Cowdell(CM) and Mary Brown(H)
After a closely fought match over 8 ends Chris and Mary ran
out the winners, the score being 10-6
Each of the finalists received a bottle of wine as a prize.
Photo's were taken in front of the pavilion which are now on
the website.
All competitors are to be congratulated for taking part. A
donation of £98 from the pensioners afternoon 'tea pot' was
added to the money raised last week which comes to around
£500.
Well Done everyone, see you all again next year.
